As a singer and vocal teacher

Joana is a singer and vocal teacher living in Brussels.

She is really into the voice as an instrument - its unique qualities, its ability to go beyond limits, and all the cool things it can do. She has been studying how to use the voice for over 10 years, exploring different musical genres and styles.

She started her vocal studies in pop, rock, soul with Ricardo Silva at Escola Lugar da Música, in Lisbon, and got a certification in Pop Vocals by Rockschool, showing her enthusiasm and interest into getting to know and mastering the modern aspects of singing.

Her education in Jazz Vocals at Hotclube de Portugal (2020-2023) with Marta Garrett, Joana Machado, and Beatriz Nunes, made her dive into the fascinating world of Jazz Vocals and improvisation and fall in love with this genre. She further attended jazz singing masterclasses with the renowned portuguese artists Maria João and Maria Mendes.

To understand more about how our voices work, she joined the "Canto Consciente" course, digging deep into the anatomy and physiology of the singing voice with Fernanda Lopes, a renowned speech therapist and vocal coach from Brazil.

As a singer, she has been part of choirs and ensembles like Coro do Hotclube de Portugal, Nova Era Vocal Ensemble, Meninas do Coro, Coro Iscte. Beyond Portugal, she joined the EuroChoir (2022) in Switzerland.

She has taken part in Ethno music camps in France, Spain, Belgium, Sweden and Austria - gatherings where folk musicians from around the world share songs and tunes from their cultures. She also completed the Ethno Artistic Mentor Training and is now a mentor at Ethno camps.

She explored the rich traditions of Portuguese music by studying the adufe - a traditional percussion instrument used to accompany singing - with Rui Silva. She has taken part in Festa do Adufe twice, learning directly from the women of Monsanto, and in 2025, she was the vocal teacher at the festival.

Joana currently lives in Brussels, where she give vocal lessons at the Bridge Theatre, Brussels and she is developing the DrumSong project, a fusion of voice and percussion with Suchet Malhotra. She is the vocal leader of Chantons tous ensemble, a community choir dedicated to traditional songs from around the world, a project suported by the Commune of Ixelles.
